Summary, Etc. This book tells the inspiring story of Jolly Tanko Yusuf, Nigeria's former ambassador to Germany, China, North Vietnam, Korea, and Sierra Leone. A Christian elder statesman, politician, and diplomat, Yusuf here shares his life, his vision, and his passion. His intimate involvement in Nigeria's political development and his keen awareness of world-impacting events make him a person to whom we may well listen. Yusuf speaks with a conviction born of experience. Although he grew up in a traditional Muslim family, he fought his father's demand that he attend an Islamic school. Yusuf worked with leaders of the missionary community and with colonial administrators. When Nigeria gained its independence from England in 1960, his district elected him its first representative to Parliament. He rose to positions of national and international leadership. Now retired, Ambassador Yusuf sees himself as a person whom God has chosen for a special purpose: to live and preach among Christians regardless of tribe or denomination. Drawing on diaries and notebooks written since 1942, Ambassador Yusuf, together with Lillian V. Grissen, recounts the story of his fascinating life, of his long career in public life, and of the controversial issues and events that have produced the Nigeria of today. Nigeria's political strife - sharpened by ongoing Muslim-Christian antagonism and conflict - continues even today, making Yusuf's story relevant, even urgent. The book reflects current conditions in Nigeria, a country that typifies the chaos so rampant in many African countries muddling in the infancy of their independence from colonial powers and military dictators. Yusuf tells his story here for present and future generations of Nigerians - and for all humankind.
